Description
Letter in which Jameson suggests to John that they begin the sittings in February 1939. He notes that the major family portraits in his possession are those of his great grandfather and grandmother by Raeburn, and as he has been working in the family firm now for 50 years, he wants to leave behind a portrait that is their equal. He is also very agreeable to John’s request that the portrait is not commented upon until it is completed, writing that “it would not suit me at all to have it talked about”. He also refers to John’s issue with the Royal Academy and is happy not to show the portrait there if that is John’s wish. As their mutual friend Lutyens is now President there, Jameson feels he will put pressure on them both, but the final decision will be John’s. He adds that John will have to deal with Lutyens as Jameson has lately had a heated disagreement with him regarding the Irish war memorial, of which Jameson is the Committee Chairman.
