Description
Scrapbook album embossed with the 'Album Memento' logo. Contains news cuttings, photographs, and letters detailing William Orpen's life and career. Cuttings include a large number of printed reproductions of Orpen paintings. Articles comprise reporting on recent exhibitions and paintings, and touch on family life with news of christenings, the engagement of Mary Orpen, the marriage of Vivien St. George, and the marriage of Betty Rothenstein. A letter from Buckingham Palace is included (April 1924) pertaining to the Queen's Doll House in the Palace of Arts British Empire Exhibition, thanking Orpen for his support. A ticket to admit Orpen to the event is also present. Letters from Orpen's publishers Williams & Norgate are included, as are letters from the Italian Ambassador regarding the Uffizi Gallery's acceptance of an Orpen self-portrait (August 1924), and the Carnegie Institute President's agreement to having Orpen paint his portrait (August 1924). An inscribed studio portrait of [Lord Beaverbrook] is also included, with the following inscription on the rear 'Beaverbrook asked Orpen to paint him, Oct 26. Prime Minister, Canada 21-26, 26-30, 35-48'. Scrapbook includes three photographs, one of an unidentified painting [of hay being loaded and horses standing ready nearby]; another of William Orpen in his studio working on a portrait of the actress Gladys Cooper; and a third showing the tenor John McCormack and William Orpen standing by McCormack's portrait.
