Description
Scrapbook contains news cuttings, photographs, and letters detailing William Orpen's life and career. Significant attention is given to Orpen's war work, his time on the front, and his time in Paris recording the Peace Conference. Articles also focus on the publication of his memoir, 'An Onlooker in France, 1917-1919'. The exhibition of his Royal Academy painting of 'Le Chef de l'Hôtel Chatham, Paris' is also covered in detail, as is his dispute with Lord Leverhulme over the latter's portrait. Orpen's published representations of the Landru murder trial in Versaille in November 1921 is noted towards the end of the scrapbook. Cuttings include a large number of printed reproductions of Orpen paintings. Letters comprise responses from members of the public to Orpen's paintings, his book, 'An Onlooker in France', and a poem he has published in a newspaper. A letter from his London publishers Williams & Norgate is also included. Photographs include seven images from the Landru murder trial in Versaille, showing trial lawyers, defendent Henri Désiré Landru, guards, and attending spectators.
