Description
Notebook with "Cuttings, Articles, etc; Family Notes" written on the cover. Contains an inscription by Barbara Geoghegan on the first page. Includes magazine and newspaper cuttings (20pp). Topics include Sarah Purser and the Geoghegan family, humorous poems (some cuttings, others typewritten or handwritten), an account of Sarah Purser's "At Homes," obituaries for Professor F.C. Purser and Mr. Frederick Purser, and photograph cuttings from newspaper articles about Sarah Purser (including a newspaper photograph depicting her with "Dr. R. Furlong, Curator of the National Gallery"). Cuttings have been gathered from numerous publications including the Parish Magazine (February 1935), The Times, The Times of India, The Irish Times, Punch, Daily Telegraph, Daily Mirror, and other unidentified publications dating from the mid-1930s to the mid-1940s. Also included is an illustrated menu for a "Dinner in honour of Miss S.H. Purser R.H.A. by [the] Council and Committee of the Friends of the National Collections of Ireland" given at the Shelbourne Hotel on 31 March 1938 (printed by the Cuala Press). This section of the notebook also contains twenty-one loose inserts consisting of newspaper cuttings. These encompass obituaries written for Sarah Purser; poems, typewritten and handwritten, (some relating to wartime life) copied from publication; a loose page from an exhibition catalogue published after Purser's death; a loose page from the Report for the year 1943-1944 of the General Meeting of the Friends of the National Collections; a typescript document entitled "Sarah Purser, An Appreciation" regarding Purser's death by Desmond FitzGerald; a photograph of Sarah Purser seated with an unidentified man in evening dress by Vyvyan Poole (photographer) 42 St. Albans Park, Dublin. The second section of the notebook (at the back) contains cuttings (7pp) relating to Robert Hugh Geoghegan during his time at Cambridge University, and mainly pertain to athletic competitions. This section includes two loose inserts. These encompass; a letter of recommendation from John E[dward] Marr (university lecturer in geology) relating to a geological surveyor position sought by R.H. Geoghegan; a photograph (8 x 10 cm) of a man [R.H. Geoghegan] standing outside with a dog.
