This series represents correspondence from various persons to Sir Frederic William Burton. The bulk of the correspondence relates to Burton's career as an artist and his directorship of the National Gallery (London, UK). Included are letters from prominent artists such as John Frederick Lewis, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, Sir Frederic Leighton, John Ruskin, and Edward Burne-Jones. Other correspondents include George Henry Lewes (lifelong partner of the novelist George Eliot), the poet Martin Farquhar Tupper, Irish antiquarian Samuel Ferguson, and philologist and orientalist Freidrich Max Müller. Correspondence relating to Burton's directorship includes a letter from Montagu Corry (private secretary to Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli), and letters from the Duke of Northumberland and the Earl of Suffolk inviting Burton to tour their private collections.
