Description
Minutes of board meeting held on 7th October 1959 in which the following was discussed: the Minister of Education 'intimated' that sanction would be given for the appointment of 'an assistant to the staff of the National Gallery'. The salary is outlined for a man and a lower salary for a woman. The board indicated they considered the current safety precautions in the Gallery 'inadequate'. Approval was given for the purchase of the following pictures: "The Holy Woman at the Tomb" by van den Eeckhout for £800 + £40 commission from Murphy, Buckley and Keogh. "Miss Dowden at the Age of Eleven" by J B Yeats the Elder [NGI 1395"Portrait of Hester Dowden as a Child"] for £250 from Mrs D Lennox Robinson. Drawing of Oliver Sheppard by William Orpen [NGI 3305] from Mrs K Sheppard for £150. Lord Longford appointed judge in the Taylor Art Scholarship.
