Description
Minutes of board meeting held on 3rd October 1956 in which the following was discussed: copies of the previous minutes were now being circulated to board members at this meeting. A letter was read from the Department of Education stating the grant-aid for purchase and repairs would be reduced by £2000. The picture, "Portrait of his Father and Mother" by Orpen was bequeathed by the late F E Orpen and accepted. It was approved to loan pictures by Mantegna to an exhibition in Rome and "The Village School" by Jan Steen [NGI 226] to the Council of Europe. It was agreed to purchase "Carolan, the Harper", attributed to Johann van der Hagen from Captain Beresford Mundey for £150. It was agreed to accept the gift of two Evie Hone cartoons from the Friends of of the Irish National Collections. It was agreed to accept 13 portraits of the Edgeworth family from R B Montagu. It was agreed to make further enquiries about the sale of "The Opening of the Grand Canal Docks" by Earl Camden 1796, attributed to William Ashford [NGI 11602] for £525. Lord Longford appointed as judge in the Taylor Art Competition.
