Description
Minutes of a board meeting held on 2nd April 1952 in which the following was discussed: the purchase of a painting of Countess Constance Markievicz was approved [NGI 1231]. Two drawings by J.B. Yeats were approved for purchase [NGI 3253-3254]. No action was taken in regards to the purchase of a portrait of Lady Gregory by Mancini. Rev. Monsignor Patrick J. Boylan had become President of the Royal Irish Academy and was therefore a member of the board. Mr John Burke was reappointed to the board. The Minister for Posts and Telegraphs had requested permission to reproduce a portrait of Thomas Moore by Sir Martin Archer Shee [NGI 775], which was granted. The Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston, had enquired as to an extenstion of their loan of pictures, which was granted. The audited account of the Lane Fund for 1951 was submitted and approved. The purchase of "The Holy Family" by Fra Bartolommeo was approved [NGI 1232]. The purchase of a portrait of James Joyce by Jacques Emile Blanche was declined. The gift of a study of a child, from Mr Nicholas Richardson, was accepted [NGI 1233]. Two requests for loans were granted. The gift of "Dawn, Connemara" by Paul Henry was accepted [NGI 1234]. The purchase of a portrait of Daniel O'Connell was declined. More information was given in regards to Lane Fund investments. The Director was authorised to appeal to the Office of Public Works in regards to the central heating of the Gallery, as the artwork could not be subject to extreme temperature changes, and alter the timing of the heating to reflect this. The Director reported on the credit of the Lane Fund.
