Description
Minutes of board meeting held on 3rd October 1951 in which the following was discussed: the Committe of the Wexford Festival had selected paintings to loan from the Gallery, all of which the board approved of. The Royal Academy of Arts had also requested the loan of artwork from the Gallery, which the board granted. A draft letter was circulated in regards to a new lift for the Gallery and discussing salaries. The letter was approved of. More information regarding the Lane Fund investments. The board's offer of £600 for the portrait of Pamela by Romney, had been refused. Gifts were received and accepted from Chester Beatty. A portrait of Joseph O'Neill by Sarah Purser was gifted to the Gallery [NGI 1220]. Two portraits of ladies "Rosa" and another by Stephen Catterson Smith were gifted to the Gallery [NGI 1221-1222]. A gift of a drawing of James Joyce by Wyndham Lewis was also gratefully accepted [NGI 3043]. The Gallery agreed to accept multiple busts of former National leaders given to them by the Department of Finance. The purchase of a picture of the Irish House of Commons was declined. The purchase of a portrait of Michaele Esposito by S.C. Harrison was approved [NGI 1219]. A proof copy of an illustrated catalogue of 133 pictures was submitted to the board and approved. A proposal was received from Mr James White about hosting a lecture series at the Gallery, but due to the need of charging an admission fee, the board felt this could not be possible. A letter was recieved from Mr Patrick O'Reilly expressing that the statue of Bernard Shaw should be outdoors, not within the Gallery. The letter was marked "read." The issue of export licenses for pictures was discussed. The Director reported on the credit of the Lane Fund.
