Description
Minutes of a board meeting held on 6th June 1945 in which the following was discussed: the Minister for Education appointed Mr Henry Mangan to the board, and reappointed Justice Murnaghan. Mr James S. Sleator was appointed a judge of the Taylor Art Scholarship with Dr George Furlong as alternative judge. The Director reported on investments of the Lane Fund. Three pictures bequeathed by Miss Mary Olivia Kennedy were submitted and approved, "Terra Rouge" by Roger Fry ["Red earth" NGI 1124], "Trout on Grass" by Robert Medley [NGI 1125], and "A Cornish Landscape" by Matthew Smith [NGI 1123]. It was agreed that the latter should be lent to the Municipal Gallery. The Secretary of the Jack B. Yeats National Loan Exhibition requested the loan of two Yeats pictures, which was approved. The Director reported that the 224 pictures that had been removed for safe-keeping during the emergency were now back in the Gallery, with some having minor blistering damage. The purchase of a portrait of Lord Dunsavy by Orlando Rouland was declined for purchase. The late Mrs Ellen Anderson bequeathed a painting by Sir Martin Archer Shee, which the Gallery accepted [NGI 1129]. A letter was received from Mrs Edward Magawly Banon wishing to donate to the Gallery a collection of historical items in memory of her late husband, to be kept as a singular collection. The board accepted this gift but replied to Mrs Brown stating that they would not be able to keep the collection together. The Director reported on the credit of the Lane Fund.
