Description
Minutes of a board meeting held on 5th July 1944 in which the following was discussed: the Department of Education granted the loan requested by the Friends of the National Collections of Ireland in the previous meeting, and details were discussed regarding the arrangement of this. Further discussion was held regardng the will of Sir Hugh Lane and the Gallery's position, the board resolved that they did not want to waive their claim to some of the funds from the will, but were waiting on the advice of English Counsel. The Director reported on the annual report and balance sheet of the Staked Plains Trust Ltd. which was an investment of the Lane Fund which had not produced any dividends. It was agreed to close the Gallery for cleaning and rehanging in October. A gift of five pencil sketches by J.B. Yeats from Miss Alice Digby were gratefully accepted [NGI 2727, NGI 7683, NGI 2986, NGI 3256 and NGI 3257]. The Director read a suggestion from a visitor to better publicise the art held in the Gallery by posting reproductions of it on public transport, as the Metropolitan Museum of New York had done. Although the board could not do anything at present, they instructed the Director to enquire to the Metropolitan Museum as to the organisation and benefits of such a scheme. The Director reported on the credit of the Lane Fund.
