Description
Minutes of a board meeting held on 6th October 1943 in which the following was discussed: the board express their condolences to the relatives of the late Miss Sarah Purser, who had been a member of the board for many years. The Gallery had been unable to secure the Reynolds portrait of Private Robinson as they had been out-bid. The painting by Claude Monet "Givre au Bois de Boulogne" had been sold before the auction. The purchase of "A Heath Scene: Sun after Storm" by John Crome was approved [NGI 1110]. The purchase of a portrait of George Moore by Sir William Orpen was also approved. A picture "St Catherine" was declined for purchase. "Christ in the House of Simeon, the Pharisee" was approved for purchase ["Christ in the House of Simon the Pharisee" by Giovanni Battista Tiepolo, NGI 1111]. "The Calling of St Matthew" was also presented for purchase but the board would only agree to the purchase if there was a price reduction. "The Prophet Isiah" by Ugolino di Nerio and "Four Small Medallions of Saints" were approved for purchase [NGI 1112 and NGI 1113]. The purchase of a marble bust of Richard Brinsley Sheridan by Thomas Kirk was also approved for purchase [NGI 8000]. The Director reported on the standing credit of the Lane Fund.
