Description
Minutes of board meeting held on 7th December 1938 in which the following was discussed: death of John Purser Griffith acknowledged. Receipt of £100 insurance claim for the loss of "The Marriage of Thetis and Peleus" by Poussin mentioned in previous minutes acknowledged. The picture, "A Man with a Candle", attributed to Honthorst ["A Man Singing by Candlelight" by Adam de Coster NGI 1005], offered for sale by Isaac Levi (mentioned in previous minutes) was purchased for £180. The Belgian Government requested the loan of three pictures, the loan of a Rembrandt was declined, the loan of the Poussin (recorded now as lost) was not possible. It was agreed to loan "Landscape" by Siberechts [NGI 900]. The Director submitted for purchase "Madonna and Child" by Mabuse fro £1500 and "Landscape" by Monet for £425 [NGI 1009]. It was agreed to purchase the Monet. The Director discussed the purchase of small triptych attributed to Barnardo Daddi but 'probably by Jacob del Casentino'. The Director was instructed to pay not more than £1200. Certain pictures on loan to the Presidents House were discussed. A list of ten pictures the President (Douglas Hyde) considered desirable is listed. It was felt the board had 'no power to lend in this case' but it was requested the previous minutes be examined to find evidence of previous loan arrangements. A committee was formed of Justice Murnaghan, Mr Connolly, and the Director to examine the safeguarding of public buildings and their content during the National Emergency. End of minute book. In the box there is small plastic sleeve with A5 (approx) with three handwritten notes with a list of numbers and a title 'Organisation of the Gallery.
