Description
Minutes of board meeting held on 6th April 1938 in which the following was discussed: the death of Caulfield Orpen [served on NGI board 1914 to 1932] acknowledged. A bequest of pictures by a Kathleen Ffrench accepted. The Director reported on the conference by the Museums Association about air raid precautions. It was decided to draw up a list of the most valuable pictures in order of merit to save them in case of a raid. The executors of the will of I M Maguire offered five pictures by George Chinnery for £300. The purchase was agreed. The board declined the offer of five pictures from separate sellers. Mr Justice Murnaghan offered for loan a 15th century Italian tondo which was accepted. It was agreed to lend the pastel head of a man by Edward Lutterell to the Burlington Fine Arts Exhibition. Oliver Sheppard appointed judge in the Taylor Art Scholarship. It agreed to loan "The Liffey Swim" by Jack B. Yeats [NGI 941] to the Dublin Municipal Gallery of Modern Art. No action was taken on the offer of a picture, "St. Sebastian" by Liberale da Verona for £900.
