Description
Minutes of a board meeting held on 4th December 1940 in which the following was discussed: the Minister for Education had reappointed Lord Longford to the board. The Department of Finance requested a report from the Gallery stating what activities and resources would be essential for the maintenance of the Gallery in the event of Ireland becoming involved in hostilities. The estimate for 1941-1942 was submitted and approved. A gift of a portrait of Mrs George Rochfort by Stephen Slaughter was accepted [NGI 1061]. The board resolved that the painting "The Dead Ptarmigan" should be stored in the Irish Consul General in New York for the forseeable future. The purchase of a Flemish Triptych was approved [NGI 1049]. A portrait of J.E. Lawrence (Lawrence of Arabia) was refused for purchase. The purchase of a "Portrait of a Gentleman" by Sampson Towgood Roch was declined. The Director informed the board that he was trying to acquire "Morning in the City" by Jack B. Yeats from the Haverty Trust. The Director reported on the credit of the Lane Fund. The present hanging of Irish pictures was raised, and it was proposed that a sub-committee be formed to deal with the issue of more suitable hanging, consisting of Justice Murnaghan, Mr O'Brien and Mr Holloway.
