Description
Minutes of board meeting held on 4th July 1923 in which the following was discussed: Major Sir Neville Wilkinson withdrew from the board room after questions were raised about his eligibility to be there as his term had expired. A statement was read about the previous meeting, which was cancelled, as the Director believed there was a lack of a quorum, as the terms of Mr Bodkin and Mr Hogg had expired and not yet been renewed. A resolution was made about the meeting held on 7th February, stating that the Director was unauthorised in crossing out minutes which had been signed by the Chairman, and had no right to cut out a page of the minute book, therefore the Registrar is instructed to re-insert the page. The Dail requested the loan of a collection, which was granted. Mr Hogg retired the Director, thus no quorum was in attendance and the meeting closed. The board asked Mr O'Brien to sign the above statement. The Director exhibited to the board two miniatures he had purchased at Sotheby's, namely portraits of Charles Broderick, Archbishop of Cashel, and his wife. The Director exhibited a further painting he had purchased for £1000 but the board instructed him to dispose of it as he wished. A portrait of the Rt. Hon. A. Malone was offered for purchase to the board but refused. A portrait of Archbishop King was also refused. The "Pieta" by Girolamo da Santacroce was offered for purchased and accepted by the board [NGI 846]. The board resolved to adopt all resolutions passed in the meetings in the minute book held in The National Gallery from 7th June 1922 to present. Correspondence between the Registrar and the Minister of Finance was noted, and a reply urging the Minister to fill any vacancies in the board as soon as possible. Mr Bodkin was appointed as judge of the Taylor Art Competition. The Director donated to the Gallery "Brazillian Landscape" by Frans Post which they accepted [NGI 847]. The Director then submitted his letter of resignation to the board, citing that he cannot dedicate as much time to the Gallery as necessary. Robert Langton Douglas's resignation was unanimously accepted and effective immediately, and the board decided that the Registrar should sign off on any documents until such time a replacement was found.
